Illumination Zone: Episode 242 | HaystackID’s Esther Birnbaum sits down with Mary Mack and Holley Robinson

Illumination Zone EDRM Podcast

Esther Birnbaum, Executive Vice President of Data Intelligence at EDRM Trusted Partner HaystackID, returns to sit down with EDRM’s Mary Mack and Holley Robinson. She first appeared on the podcast in Episode 202 in March 2025. In this episode, Esther discusses how the conversation around GenAI has shifted from whether it works for document review to where it fits within legal work and how to use it responsibly at scale. She describes how the next generation of CaseBot uses agentic retrieval and Specialized Skill Agents to iteratively investigate the case record, follow evidentiary threads, and complete tasks such as building chronologies, developing fact narratives, and checking witness accounts against the record. The conversation also explores how Case Insight provides an early, contextual understanding of a dataset and how CaseBot can help teams investigate specific issues in greater depth. Esther addresses defensibility and source traceability, explains the importance of purpose-built tools, and emphasizes that legal professionals must understand a tool’s limitations before relying on its output. Looking ahead, she discusses persistent saved sessions, client-specific custom agents, and the movement toward AI that supports legal teams throughout the life of a matter. We ended with a family-centered fun fact from Esther and how best to reach her.
