Data Privacy, TAR, Artificial Intelligence Are among the Technologies Reshaping the Practice of Law
Durham, NC – Jeff Ward, director of the Duke Center on Law & Technology (DCLT), and Laia Bertran Manyé, a DCLT Fellow and GDPR expert, will speak at the Technology in Practice Conference Nov. 8-10, 2017, in Toronto. Technology in Practice brings together legal professionals, technology experts and members of the judiciary for practical education and discussion on emerging technologies in the legal industry.
“So many aspects of the law, from large law firm operations to the administration of justice and the management of rapidly growing data, are increasingly technology driven,” says Ward. “I’m looking forward to participating in this meeting of minds from law and technology and sharing some of the work we are doing at Duke Law and EDRM.”
Ward will moderate a panel discussion on “The GDPR Effect,” Thursday, November 9, at 10 a.m. The session will explore the practical implications of GDPR on the practice of law in North America. The topic will include privacy and data protection by design, the underlying tensions between cybersecurity and principals of privacy and the implications of GDPR for e-discovery. The panel of experts will include Dr. Ann Cavoukian, executive director of the Privacy and Big Data Institute at Ryerson University; Imran Ahmad, partner at Miller Thomson LLP; Michael Power, managing director, Privacy, at Valencia IIP Advisors Limited; and Laia Bertran Manyé, fellow at the Duke Center on Law & Technology (DCLT).
Thursday at 2 p.m. Ward will join Mary Mack, executive director of ACEDS; David Kinnear, chief executive officer at High Performance Counsel; and Eric P. Mandel, director, Solutions Architecture, eDiscovery at Ricoh, in a discussion of “Pillars of Tomorrow: How eDiscovery is Reshaping the Practice of Law.” Panelists will discuss the emerging trends contributing to the evolution and maturation of the e-discovery industry.

Jeff Ward is associate clinical professor of law and director of the Duke Center on Law & Technology (DCLT), which coordinates Duke’s leadership at the intersection of law and technology with programs such as the Duke Law Tech Lab, a pre-accelerator for legal technology companies, and the Access Tech Tools initiative, a program to help students and Duke’s community partners to employ human-centered design thinking and available technologies to create tools to enhance access to legal services.
Ward focuses his scholarship and professional activities on the law and policy of emerging technologies (blockchain, artificial intelligence, robotics, IoT, etc.), the future of lawyering and the socioeconomic effects of rapid technological change, with an emphasis on ensuring equitable access to the tools of economic growth and the resources of the law.
About Laia Bertran Manyé
Laia Bertran Manyé is a DCLT Fellow at Duke Law. Her research area focuses on the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. She works with EDRM on the GDPR initiative to create a set of guidelines for cross-border data transfers taking place during e-discovery between the EU and U.S. under the GDPR. Bertran Manyé graduated from Duke University School of Law in May 2017 (Duke Law scholar), specializing in privacy, intellectual property and new technologies law.
