At a functional level, EDRM consists of projects and initiatives.
Each project or initiative is meant to address a practical need, either in e-discovery or information governance. Some efforts are grander in scope, such as IGRM, others narrower and more targeted, such as Collection Standards. These projects are in various states of activity. Focus for 2017
EDRM is currently focusing on developing educational materials and standards for technology-assisted review. A project team has been identified and is working through the spring to begin drafting; the team will meet during the 2017 EDRM annual workshop at Duke Law (May 15-17) to advance its work. On-Going Projects & Activities
We launched the Collection Standards project at the 2013-2014 EDRM kickoff meeting. We published the first version of the EDRM Collection Standards in 2013 and delivered an updated version in January 2014. Accompanying the EDRM Collection Standards is the EDRM Collection Standards Glossary.
To do: Address collection of data from mobile devices, social media and websites.
The Data Set team has published four data sets: EDRM Enron Email v1 Data Set, EDRM File Format Data Set, EDRM Internationalization Data Set and EDRM Micro Datasets.
- Evaluate creating additional sets, as opposed to locating organic ones.
- Attempt to locate social media datasets.
The EDRM Glossary, first published in 2006, contains definitions of over 1,400 electronic discovery and information governance terms. It includes terms from 6 specialized glossaries as well as terms not in those glossaries.
- Improve ability to search the glossary pages on the website.
- Identify additional glossaries to incorporate into the EDRM Glossary, including additional information governance glossaries.
- Evaluate creating an EDRM Glossary app.
IGRM (Information Governance Reference Model)
The IGRM Project offers guidance to Legal, IT, Records Management, line-of-business leaders and other business stakeholders within organizations. The Project facilitates dialogue among these stakeholders by providing a common language and reference for discussion and decision-making based on the needs of the organization.
The IGRM team published the first version of the IGRM diagram in 2010 and updated it in 2012.
- Create IGRM poster.
- Develop and conduct information governance survey.
- Identify additional information governance glossaries to add to the EDRM Glossary.
One of the first EDRM groups, the Metrics team developed the Metrics Model; created the codes that became the UTBMS eDiscovery Code Set; designed the EDRM eDiscovery Maturity Self-Assessment Test (eMSAT-1); and published the EDRM Budget Calculators, some created by EDRM members and others submitted to EDRM by others.
- Continue to develop SEAT – the Standardized E-discovery Assessment Test.
- Continue efforts to web-enable the EDRM budget calculators.
Model Code of Conduct
EDRM published its Model Code of Conduct in 2011 and in 2015 clarified the language in Principle 3 of the MCOC. To date, 113 organizations and 39 individuals have subscribed to the MCOC. Subscribers pledge that they will adhere to the principles, corollaries and guidelines set forth in the MCoC.
To do: Approach various associations about promotion and adoption of the MCOC.
The Processing Standards team published a for-comment version of the EDRM Processing Standards Guide in 2015.
To do: Finalize Processing Standards Guide and publish finalized version.
The Production Standards team published the first version of the EDRM Production Standards in 2011 and published version two in 2014.
To do: Address advanced analytics, clustering, de-duplication and email suppression.
Privacy & Security Risk Reduction Model
The PSRRM team published the original EDMR Privacy Risk Reduction Model in 2013 and later than year published the updated EDRM Privacy & Security Risk Reduction Model.
- Evaluate whether to update model.
- Develop PSRRM checklists.
Since 2012, EDRM has hosted over 50 webinars on e-discovery, information governance and related topics. We are currently seeking presenters for a new series of webinars on TAR. Contact EDRM@law.duke.edu for details.

- Bulletin Board – Implement open, on-line EDRM bulletin board.
- Cross-Border E-Discovery – Develop and publish materials addressing practical aspect of discovery that crosses national borders.
- Curation – Develop and implement process for curating e-discovery and information governance content and publishing curated content via EDRM website.
- E-Discovery for the Busy Litigator – Develop content specifically designed for the busy litigator, including checklists and templates.
- Improved Requests – Develop and publish materials to help litigators improve the quality of their initial disclosures, discovery requests and discovery responses as they relate to ESI.
- Onboarding – Develop and publish e-discovery materials that organizations can use when they bring new people on board.
- Preservation & Legal Hold Standards – Develop and publish EDRM stages standards for preservation and legal holds.
- Proportionality – Develop and publish materials to better explain proportionality in e-discovery and means of achieving it.
- Review & Analytics Standards – Develop and publish EDRM stages standard for review and analytics.
