Weekly Letter to our Global Community: 15 Mar 22

EDRM Letter to our global community 15th March 2022

Dear EDRM community,

The word for the week is adaptability.

Maternity hospitals and nuclear power facilities are targets in Ukraine as citizen soldiers defend, and families uproot and decamp for safer environs.  Countries, organizations and individuals are making relatively quick decisions to interrupt economic activity and support sanctions and arms.  Satellite internet, VPN’s and encrypted messaging are augmenting an unplugged internet.  New, abrupt rises of COVID in hospital admissions and deaths are impacting Europe, Singapore, Hong Kong, and high-tech Shenzhen.

In Legal Tech this week, we experience the Legalweek hangover, where we evaluate the activities, costs and benefits of this year’s delayed start of high season.  “Return to Office” is in full force with mask and vaccine mandates tapering for many firms.  The US FTC, in addition to normal penalties for those in its crosshairs, is now mandating algorithmic destruction for AI models built on ill-gotten data. London’s Information Commissioner’s Office has fined a criminal defense firm £98,000 due to not implementing low-cost security mitigations after sensitive case files were exfiltrated and posted on the dark web.   In this candidate’s market, Eversheds Sutherland will build their own with an innovative two year internal program for legal tech education.  The US Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE) will change once again, this time addressing expert testimony.

Our “Run-Up to Legalweek” had great webinar presentations from our EDRM Trusted Partners to give you a taste of their offerings in case you missed them. The offerings from Onna, Exterro, Cellebrite and Merlin Search Technologies are freely available on demand.

EDRM projects are open to new contributors again, please reach out to info@edrm.net to let us know your interest, and we will introduce you to the appropriate Project Trustee.  You can check out EDRM’s project listings here.

Our Syndicated EDRM Global Podcast Network is available via iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and your favorite podcast app, so you can listen at your leisure.  Kaylee and Mary have our own podcast, the Illumination Zone, joining TAR Talk podcast.  Reach out to info@edrm.net to suggest guests, including your own fabulous self.

We continue to Zoom gather for an hour to give and get general support in our one hundred and fourth week each Tuesday, beginning our third year (!) today.  These sessions are point in time for us as humans and are not recorded.

Email us at info@edrm.net to be included on the group invitation for our interactive general support. Remember, you are not alone, and you are welcome at our events, or to reach out for help.  If you are having a mental health emergency, please consider these resources for professional help.

We welcome your participation in our projects, webinars, support gatherings, and our EDRM Hub, our job board/event/directory website.  There is no charge for these EDRM offerings, thanks to our very generous partners.

Assess and respond,
Mary & Kaylee
