In the same way that Batman’s utility belt famously supplied whatever tool was needed at just the right moment, the E-Discovery App can be your e-discovery utility belt. Reed Smith’s free, comprehensive, and easy-to-use App delivers a full spectrum of e-discovery resources to the fingertips of lawyers, paralegals, and other e-discovery professionals throughout the world. Many of these carefully curated resources were previously only available for a fee from law firms or other providers.

Do you need to look up a rule? Just pull out your smartphone, or click on your App bookmark, and—SWOOSH!—there, under “Selected Rules,” are convenient links to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Evidence, and Professional Conduct—not to mention the rules of civil procedure for all 50 U.S. states.

Time to draft a legal hold notice, or a Rule 502(d) non-waiver order, but don’t have a form handy?—KAPOW!—click on “Glossaries, Guides & Forms” in the App and you’ll find curated template forms to serve as your starting point.

Time to draft a legal hold notice, or a Rule 502(d) non-waiver order, but don’t have a form handy?—KAPOW!—click on “Glossaries, Guides & Forms” in the App and you’ll find curated template forms to serve as your starting point.

Your client has 200 GBs of documents to be reviewed and they want you to use TAR? —BANG!—estimate how many documents that is from the “ESI Rules of Thumb”; then—BAM!—apply the Cost & Schedule Tool to develop a preliminary budget —THWACK!!—contact one or more of the 50+ solution providers listed in the “Solution Provider Directory”—in this battle, they can help you even more than Robin can!

Sure, you could “call Alfred” to help locate what you need, or you could do your own internet search to find some of the links or forms on the App. Most of the time, however, the App will save you time finding what you are looking for while providing “best in class” resources that can serve as starting points for your legal drafting and/or research. Now, corporate users can get many of their questions answered before they even call a lawyer and, when they do, they can focus on the tailored solutions they need, armed with the information the App delivers.

This one convenient and easy-to-use tool reduces the need for lawyers to come into the office to research info, or to spend extra time locating needed forms and resources. The App also provides top-notch training resources, including:

  • E-Discovery CLEs available on-demand;
  • Dozens of free podcasts available from six featured e-discovery podcast providers;
  • A frequently updated e-discovery calendar of events, listing major e-discovery conferences and providing information and registration links; and
  • Numerous e-discovery blog posts, articles, and links to other training resources.

The E-Discovery App was developed by a Reed Smith committee led by partner and practice group leader David Cohen, who also chairs EDRM’s Project Trustees. The Reed Smith App Committee meets bi-weekly to ensure that the App is continually updated and improved. The group regularly screens new resources for inclusion, seeks ways to enhance current features, and develops new content not previously available.

Multiple EDRM project teams have made their work product available to App users and the e-discovery community.

Multiple EDRM project teams have made their work product available to App users and the e-discovery community. Other contributors to the App include courts, in-house legal departments, e-discovery companies and organizations, and other law firms.  Resources contributed by others include synopses of recent e-discovery decisions shared by Winston & Strawn, an Electronic Evidence Workbook provided by Craig Ball, and a Rule 26(f) Checklist made available by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. In all, more than 100 legal professionals from around the world, including multiple courts and judges, have contributed content. (A full list of the contributors can be found on the “Contributors to the App” page.)

So what is the best thing about the App? Is it that you never have to reveal your true identity by plugging in any personal (or company) information in order download and use it? That the App is updated weekly, with new forms and tools added frequently? That, like Batman’s utility belt, it always seems to have just what you need when you need it? Or that the App is as free as Batman is after he escapes from an arch villains’ trap?!

Batman always used the latest technology to support his superhero ventures. Now you can become a litigation superhero yourself, by taking advantage of the applied technology behind the App and all that it has to offer. It is a utility that you will never want to be without!
