Craig Ball, author of the award winning Ball in Your Court, has published another step by step tutorial for a thorny eDiscovery task: native file BATES labeling. [Note: Craig Ball is EDRM’s General Counsel.]
Titled, “C’mon! Bates Numbering Native Production is Easy“, Craig lays out free and almost free software alternatives for the various sorts of native file BATES.
There are various ways to do it. You can prepend Bates number (Bates##_filename.ext), append Bates number (filename_Bates##.ext) or replace the filename with the Bates number, storing the original name in a load file. You can even add protective language like “PRODUCED SUBJECT TO PROTECTIVE ORDER.”
Software to accomplish the numbering includes File Renamer Basic, Ant Renamer and File Renamer for MacOS 64 bit,
