Weekly Letter to Our Global Community – 16 Aug 22

Dear EDRM Community,

EDRM Weekly letter to our global community - 22-08-16

The word of the week is evolution.

European river banks are looking like the shores of Lake Mead.  Even while pandemic mitigations fade, a Broadway show institutes a “Masks only” show for those who do. Salmon Rushdie was attacked onstage at the centuries old Chautauqua Institution in Western New York. In the Eastern District of NY, a disgruntled litigant, rebuffed in his request to see his magistrate judge, attacked a marshall in the courthouse elevator. The FBI executed a search warrant at the former Winter White House in Mar-a-Lago.  Phishers are using the phone numbers of targets’ families(successfully) at security savvy Cloudflare.

Fresh from CNN, the New York Times and the Washingtonian, former director of litigation for NARA and frequent media commentator, Jason R. Baron will participate in EDRM’s second in our “Ripped from the Headlines Flash Webinar Series”, a fireside panel discussion among Jason R. Baron, former director of litigation for NARA and two cyber lawyers, the Dever brothers on Presidential Records, the Federal Records Act and the Secret Service, DHS and DOD’s lost texts.

In legal tech this week, Zach Warren started his new job at Thomson Reuters and we wish him every success in his new endeavor. The FTC has started the rule making process on collection and monetization of personal data.  Tornado Cash, a crypto mixer designed to obscure the source and movement of funds, was sanctioned by the US Treasury, with the crypto community watching intently. The Markup identified 37 companies gathering up data from automobiles. And hat tip to photographer, videographer and blogger, Chris Dale, who pointed to methods to authenticate old photographs.

EDRM’s first, a fireside chat on the Alex Jones damages trial between Craig Ball and Mary Mack is available on demand.
