Setbacks Reframed: Relativity’s CLO Karen Klein

Blair Heidenreich, who with Mary Rechtoris and Mila Taylor of EDRM partner, Relativity lead the Stellar Women initiative, reflected on the recent recent Stellar Women workshop for the Relativity Blog. During the workshop, Relativity Chief Legal Officer Karen Klein discussed a career setback, what she learned, and tips for the Stellar Women community to persevere and come out stronger when we face our own obstacles.

As evidenced by her current role as CLO, that fear clearly did not come to fruition. But Karen expressed a dark sentiment we’ve all felt when we’ve encountered a serious professional setback: This is the end of my career as I know it.

Acknowledging the challenge of separating one’s self worth from one’s title or job, both Blair and Karen “actively works to unblur these lines so she can maintain a healthy view of self and her worth outside of the context of her job.”

With key takeaways for surviving and thriving after a setback, Blair explores:

  • Getting out of your own way
  • Engaging with your network
  • Getting over [your last, your next] title
  • The importance of a good boss
  • Giving yourself grace

The Stellar Women workshops feature in depth conversation with eDiscovery leaders, with opportunities for smaller group discussion and networking within moderated breakout rooms.
