Dear EDRM community,

The word of the week is expansion.

Mark Lanier opened a London practice with 2 English barristers to bring plaintiff group litigation (aka class action, mass tort) to the UK while on the defense side, Womble Bond Dickinson courts UK’s BDB Pitmans.  The US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals deemed the funding mechanism for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau unconstitutional and the 8th Circuit is blocking student loan forgiveness.

Bloomberg reports stunning employment results for the legal community. The lawyer unemployment rate fell from a microscopic 1% to 0.1% from the second to third quarter. (In the fourth quarter, we’re aware of two large eDiscovery providers with layoffs.)  The same Bloomberg article reports that paralegal unemployment increased, and that more men entered the legal workforce and more women left.  Jason Tashea dives into humane access to justice in:  “A Human Rights Approach to Justice Technology Procurement.
