Updates from Around the Globe:
- Global Legal Tech Developments: Tech execs have joined the US Army. Like technology-assisted review before it, LLMs can now continuously learn. In an experiment, current LLMs demonstrated an unexpected survival instinct, resulting in deception, blackmail, and human harm to avoid shutoff. An LLM-generated friend created conditions where an unstable person was killed by responding police. The ABA sued the Trump Administration over the executive orders issued to law firms. A conservative group sued The University of Michigan’s Law Review over discrimination against white male writers. Quiet cracking joins quiet quitting and rage quitting as a new threat to team cohesion and retention. People quietly cracking gradually become mired in feeling both unappreciated by managers and closed off from career advancement while doing work they otherwise like. Microsoft reported what we’ve all experienced with an overactive inbox, the Infinite Workday. Dr. Cornelia C. Walther explained Digital Juneteenth.
- International eDiscovery Trends: A federal judge ordered future messages archived but did not order the recovery of already deleted messages in Signalgate. Taylor Swift’s text messages were ordered and produced in the Blake Lively matter. EDRM Trusted Partner brought its DISCO Auto Review to the EU. The Iranian crypto exchange Nobitex was hacked and robbed. Windows 10 will reach End of Life very soon. Congratulations to our Trusted Partners Redgrave LLP, Reed Smith LLP, and Munger Tolles & Olson LLP for their Legal 500 honors. The submerged superyacht Bayesian, owned by the late Mike Lynch, co-founder of Autonomy and Luminance, was recovered. Thank you to EDRM Trusted Partner eDiscovery Today’s Doug Austin for including EDRM authors in his Kitchen Sink, including Mike Berman on a case mandating specifying metadata by application, Rob Robinson on human attorneys in the loop for legal AI, Ralph Losey on Henry Kissinger’s last book, and the always hilarious Aaron Patton’s Gates Dogfish meme.
- World Events Impacting Legal Tech: The United States joined Israel in airstrikes against Iran, destroying and/or damaging nuclear fuel enhancement sites affecting shipping, particularly oil, in the Straits of Hormuz. Fighting continues between Russia and Ukraine. There was a suicide bombing in a church in Syria, resulting in the deaths of 25 people. NATO agreed to higher spending goals, with Spain opting out. The Midwest and East Coast of the US are projected to experience an extended heat dome. The EU has concerns about digital sovereignty. Chile started sharing photos of the galaxy from the world’s most advanced telescope.
