In these final weeks of the year, we are all clearing our desks just as projects and deadlines expand to fill the empty space. EDRM is preparing for its annual holiday, and we will be closed from December 20th to January 6th, except for the Community Support Call.

Global Legal Tech Developments: Tis the season for year-end bonuses, and Big Law is going big this year. AI Chatbots are chatting up young people, with life-and-death consequences. Google made a huge breakthrough in its quantum chip, which it says cannot (yet) beat modern cryptography. Apple’s on-device LLM is here. Harvard is releasing a huge copyright-free AI training set. Mary Bennett and Rob Robinson wrote about the lawsuit over UnitedHealth Group’s AI algorithm for EDRM Trusted Partner, HaystackID. Adobe’s new tool can remove reflections from photos. Despite promising otherwise, according to the respected Tom’s Hardware site, Microsoft Recall serves up screenshots of credit card numbers and other sensitive data even with the filter enabled.
International eDiscovery Trends: Rose Hunter Jones has King & Spalding as a client after she moved her eDiscovery practice group to Hilgers Graben. Conditions are good or normal for almost all of the respondents to ComplexDiscovery’s Fall 2024 eDiscovery Business Confidence Survey with almost 40% actively deploying LLMs. EDRM Trusted Partner Opentext was named a leader and outperformer by GigaOm’s eDiscovery Radar. EDRM Trusted Partner Reed Smith’s E-Discovery Day’s webinar on controversial AI in eDiscovery topics was covered by Legaltech News’ Ella Sherman. Thank you to Doug Austin for filling his A I overflowing Kitchen Sink with Mike Berman on Rolling Discovery, Rob Robinson on M&A’s, and Ralph Losey’s new Singularity Advocate series opener, “AI with a Mind of Its Own, On Trial for its Life.”
World Events Impacting Legal Tech: ComplexDiscovery analyzed the murder of UnitedHealth Group’s CEO, the ouster of Syria’s Assad, and the 1018 days of war between Russia and Ukraine, as Russia batters Ukraine’s infrastructure. Over 100 people are dead in disputed elections in Mozambique. The US Consumer Finance Protection Board (CFPB) capped overdraft fees at $5, prompting a lawsuit. Intel is discussing spinning off its factories. Gilead is testing a once-per-year HIV prevention pill.
