Updates from Around the Globe:
- Global Legal Tech Developments: Lawsuits are already in motion for the California wildfires, with newer data types from drones, vehicles, and IoT devices implicated. In one of the first GenAI copyright claims, a new filing alleges Mark Zuckerberg approved the use of copyrighted works as one of the datasets to train Llama. Nvidia unveiled a feature like Microsoft Recall to take screenshots of your work, and unlike Recall, it is off by default. A judge ended the quest to dig up a ditched hard drive with Bitcoin credentials worth over 7 million.
- International eDiscovery Trends: Rob Robinson of our Trusted Partner, Complex Discovery, released the 2024 retrospective of M&A activity and market size in our space, along with historical charts back to 2006. EDRM leaders enhanced our understanding of the emerging technical landscape: Craig Ball on practicalities, John Tredennick & William Webber on limits, Ralph Losey on quantum computing, and Dr. Maura Grossman & Tara Emory on agentic AI. We are beginning to see public test results for AI like this one using Vectara and the Hughes evaluation model of LLMs by hallucination percentage. Thank you to Doug Austin and our Trusted Partner eDiscovery Today for filling his Kitchen Sink with Mike Berman’s EDRM post parsing interrogatory responses and document productions, Ralph Losey’s groundbreaking analysis of Google’s quantum Willow, and ATL’s Joe Patrice on a garbage AI generated complaint and Aaron Patton’s hysterical Gates Dogfish memes among others.
- World Events Impacting Legal Tech: The US Congress certified the 2024 election results without incident. Donald Trump would like to make Greenland part of the US, end the Ukraine-Russia War, and get the hostages back from Hamas. LA battles flames while Atlanta emerges from the ice. The Legal Aid Foundation of LA offers a comprehensive list of resources to help those directly affected by the wildfire. Here are some organizations accepting donations of help. Here are some resources to protect against the far-flung wildfire smoke. Researchers dug into the Antarctic and are now studying 1.7 million years of climate history there.
