As we move further into the digital age, the challenges facing corporate investigators are becoming more complex and more urgent. Cellebrite recently released its 2025 Industry Trends Whitepaper which offers a timely look at how organizations are adapting to this evolving landscape. From data overload to AI integration, it paints a picture of a field in transformation.

Managing the Growing Amount of Digital Data

One of the most striking takeaways is the sheer volume of digital data investigators now have to manage. It’s not simply emails and documents anymore, today’s investigations include gathering data from encrypted messaging apps, enterprise chat platforms, virtual meeting transcripts and even AI-generated summaries. It will come as no surprise that eDiscovery remains a top priority, with 83% of respondents calling it “very important.” The need for speed and precision in document review has made AI-powered tools a necessity, not a luxury.

But it’s more than finding the right files. Data theft and insider threats continue to loom large. While the survey shows that the frequency of these incidents hasn’t grown significantly year over year, the complexity of the data involved has. Investigators are increasingly turning to forensic tools that can analyze both structured and unstructured data to detect anomalies and prevent breaches before they escalate.

Untangling Mobile Data in the Hybrid Workplace

Mobile devices are also taking center stage. Two-thirds of cases now involve mobile data, and platforms with encrypted messaging like WhatsApp and WeChat are proving to be particularly tricky. Many organizations are struggling to collect data from these apps without compromising privacy or efficiency. Cellebrite’s latest release of Inseyets for Enterprise is designed to tackle this issue head-on, offering secure and efficient access to encrypted messaging data.

The hybrid work environment is here to stay, and with it comes another layer of complexity. As courts increasingly demand mobile content be preserved and produced with the same rigor as traditional data sources, legal teams are turning to tools that offer full file system access, targeted collection and advanced decoding capabilities. These features help investigators surface deleted data, ephemeral content and encrypted messages—critical elements in recent high-profile cases like FTX and Theranos. With the right technology, teams can move faster, uncover more information and meet rising evidentiary expectations with confidence.

A New Workflow with Cloud and AI

Cloud data strategies are evolving. While fewer organizations are using APIs to collect data from cloud sources compared to last year, adoption of purpose-built cloud collection tools has surged compared to last year. The benefits are clear: better accuracy, faster analytics, and improved compliance. Teams are investing in tools that help them meet tight deadlines while managing increasingly complex data environments.

It’s not about replacing human investigators, yet it’s about providing them an assistant to work smarter and faster – and always with a human in the loop.

And then there’s AI. While adoption is still in its early stages, the potential is undeniable. More than two-thirds of the respondents believe AI can enhance data analysis to identify patterns and trends more efficiently. More than half said the technology will help reduce manual effort in the collection process. It’s not about replacing human investigators, yet it’s about providing them an assistant to work smarter and faster – and always with a human in the loop.

In short, the future of corporate investigations is digital, distributed and data-driven. Organizations that embrace these changes and invest in the right tools and training, will be better positioned to navigate the always changing road ahead.
